The Naval Museum of Madrid is a state institution open to the public that aims to preserve, study and spread the naval activity and the maritime Spanish history. It was the result of the idea of Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán, secretary of the Navy and the contribution of the Spanish king Carlos IV in September 1792. In 1915 the construction of the new building for the Museum started, led by the architects Javier Luque and José Espelius. The museum was inaugurated on July the 16th, 1928.

The museum consists of an eclectic building with two interior courtyards. It was designed combining classic and gothic styles, following the tendencies of the first quarter of the XX century. In the inside, it has a monumental staircase, in an empire style made of marble from Carrara.
The wide collection of the museum counts with 10.500 pieces that include astronomical, scientific and navigation instruments, models of ships and navy yards, cartography, weapons, flags, uniforms, decorations and medals, military equipment, ethnographic pieces and personal objects from distinguished sailors.

The Naval Museum of Madrid is located in one of the great mansions of the Paseo del Prado, just between La Bolsa de Madrid and the Palacio de Cibeles (CentroCentro).
